The radio legend with an EYE for talent and a thirst to chalenge the status quo It’s not hard to find industry players who sing the praises of this year’s MOST Media Owner Legend, Kaya FM managing director, Greg Maloka, writes MICHAEL BRATT. The Media | wagthedog.co.za MEDIA OWNER LEGEND Undoubtedly , Maloka deserves the praise and this award; one of the most telling signs was the exceptionally positive uptake from the judging panel when his name was put forward. “Greg is a big personality who’s not afraid to make a big statement and to challenge the status quo,” stresses Gordon Muller, head coach at GSM Quadrant. “His ‘Inconvenient Truth’ initiative tackled the issue of industry underinvestment in black media head-on. He has generally championed the cause of black marketers and performing artists in media, and has articulated the aspirations of many black professionals through the Kaya FM ‘Afropolitan’ imagery,” he adds. Like Muller, the first thing that comes to many people’s minds when Maloka’s name is mentioned is the roadshow he embarked on aimed at changing the perception of black media in the country. Ricardo Lopes, global client services director for Carat South Africa, remembers it fondly. “What I like about Greg was his agenda to change the industry’s view on the way we look at the mass market and his roadshow changed the way people think about how they do their work,” he comments. Maloka also exemplifies all of the required characteristics for a legend winner, including passion, commitment, mentorship, inspiration, being a brilliant negotiator, consistency, wisdom, strong leadership skills, integrity, business acumen, and a willingness to contribute time for the betterment of the industry. “What I like about Greg Maloka is that he engages with the industry and he knows how the media game should work, and he has played it with distinction over many years in many different guises.
