MOST AWARDS RESULTS The MOST Aw ards celebrates the best of the best This year’s MOST Awards voting led to some surprising results, a significant indicator of the changing state of the South African media industry. Brad Aigner, managing director of Freshly Ground Insights, identifies the companies that excelled and rose above their competition. MOST Aw ards for media owners 2018 Three hundred and fifty people cast 3 590 votes for 88 media owners in nine categories during this year’s MOST Awards for Media Owners survey, the best response rate since its inception. The only significant change to the research methodology this year was to scrap the tiebreaker methodology in recent years. So irrespective of the margin, the rankings in 2018 were based on the final MOST score for each company listed in each category. Newspaper Category This category has always been fiercely contested and despite (or perhaps because of) the pressures on the sector in recent years, the sales teams have definitely upped their games and this year was no exception. One of the 35 voters who rated SPARK Media as the best in the newspapers category had this to say about the team: “I find all of their staff to be knowledgeable, approachable and a pleasure to work with. They always revert with solutions that are different and backed-up by research (ROOTS). Sometimes they will also propose competitor newspapers, thus ensuring a full solution for their client.” Magazine Category This category in 2018 included five previous category winners, all vying for the coveted title. This year the MOST Award for the best magazine advertising sales team went to Media24 Lifestyle. This is the fourth time that the Media24 team has come up tops, previously winning the category in 2016 and again in 2011 and 2012 (when it was branded as Media24 Central Sales). The second and third placings in the category this year were achieved by Ndalo Media and Caxton Magazines respectively, both previous winners. “The newspapers category has always been fiercely contested and despite (or perhaps because of) the presures, the sales teams have uped their games.” Magazines 2018 Rank Votes MOST 2018 Score 1 Media24 Lifestyle 80 7.66 2 Ndalo Media 43 7.34 3 Caxton Magazines 59 7.16 The Media24 Lifestyle team can be justifiably proud of its achievement this year, achieving a final MOST score that was significantly higher than that of second-placed Ndalo Media. The fact that it is a relatively large team makes its result even more impressive. One voter described the Media24 team as always available when you need them. “They are always willing to come up with innovative ideas and solve problems. Their team is friendly and always helpful,” they added. Another said: “Media24 delivers exceptional service. They are friendly, helpful and respond quickly. They are enthusiastic about our business and it is always a pleasure to have them in our agency.” The SPARK Media team has always performed well in the MOST Awards, previously winning the category as well as the overall Media Owner MOST Award in 2010.
