THE MADIA JUNE 2018

ED’S NOTE On the record… Radio is just on, fulstop As a child passionate about music, and one who played the radio loudly on my grandfather’s old claw-footed ‘radiogram’, I was banished to the laundry room at the bottom of the garden so as to not disturb the peace. There, I would sit before the enormous wooden structure trying to tune in to Long John Berks on LM Radio and listening to Springbok Radio (David Gresham’s top 20 in particular) and playing vinyl on the record player. In between the hissing and crackling of the MW band, I would warble along at the top of my voice to Bohemian Rhapsody, much to the horror of the chickens, which would scatter everywhere, and my mother, who insisted on playing recordings of Laurence Olivier reading Shakespeare to ensure we ‘spoke properly’. Fast forward a few decades, and while the radiogram is no doubt a collectible antique, radio is absolutely everywhere. On air, online, on TV, on mobile, it’s even become visual… radio is just on, fullstop. And while it’s marvellous sitting in Cape Town and listening to Kaya FM via DStv, the absolute availability of the medium comes with its own challenges, many of which we explore in our Radio Review in this issue. Is radio going through brutal or booming times? That’s the question Britta Reid has tried to answer by delving into the data and talking to agencies about the state of radio advertising. Which takes us to the radio sales houses which have had to adapt to an omni-channel environment. What are their strategies, and are they winning? Many community stations are winning… especially when stacked up against their commercial counterparts, and that’s something we’ve investigated too. We’ve included our popular radio listings this year too, a useful resource for anyone wanting information at their fingertips. A big media trend this year is activations. A kind of ‘if you’re not doing activations, you’re not doing it’ kind of thing. We’ve taken a look at activations in two ways: Firstly, from a brand perspective, and secondly, by explaining how Africa is activating. Which brings us to another big piece: Our Africa insights story, which looks at key trends across the continent. The Media, got to love it.
